WHAT TO TAKE TO A COMPETITION

Swimming Costume and Shorts

Bring more than one! If your competition lasts all day, you’ll need dry costumes for warm-ups and multiple sessions. Staying dry and comfortable is key to performing well.

Towels

Pack several. Drying off properly after each swim helps you stay warm between races. A chamois towel is a great, space-saving option too.

Brackley Swimming Club Hat

All swimmers must wear a red Brackley Swimming Club hat at external meets. If you need a new one these can be purchased via our Club Secretary.

Goggles

Choose goggles that fit snugly but comfortably. If they slip off, the strap may be too low or the eye cups too large. Always bring a spare pair—you don’t want to be caught out at the gala!

Poolside Clothing

Staying warm matters. Wear a tracksuit or t-shirt with joggers and pool shoes. Never sit around in wet kit—it cools your muscles and increases the risk of cramp. Bring extra costumes to change into between sessions.

Hydration

Swimming pools are hot and dehydration happens fast. Aim to drink at least 1 litre of water (with juice or a sports supplement) every 2 hours. A good tip: your urine should be pale—if it's dark, you need more fluids.

Nutrition

Stick to high-energy, carbohydrate-rich foods: wholemeal pasta, rice, bread, malt loaf, bananas, raisins, cereal bars, or even a bit of raw jelly post-warm-up.
Avoid fatty or salty foods like chocolate, crisps, cheese, and salted nuts—they slow you down. More detailed information can be found on our Nutrition page.

Team and Race Etiquette

- Stay with your Coach or Team Manager at all times. If you need to leave poolside, always tell them first.

- Know your race times, check the programme or team sheet.

- Report to your Coach before your race for any final tips and again afterwards to review your performance.

- Always do your best! A PB isn't the only sign of improvement - your Coach will help you spot what is going well and what can be better next time.
